Detroit Diesel — Timing Fuel Injector

Adjustments

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do not turn the engine in a left-hand direction with a wrench on the crankshaft bolt or camshaft nut at the front of the engine.

Procedure

  1. Place speed control lever in idle speed position; secure stop lever in no-fuel position if provided.
  2. Rotate crankshaft with starting motor or barring tool J 22582 until exhaust valves are fully depressed on cylinder to be timed.
  3. Place small end of injector timing gage in hole in top of injector body, with flat of gage toward injector follower.
  4. Loosen exhaust valve rocker arm push rod lock nut.
  5. Turn push rod to adjust injector rocker arm until extended part of gage just passes over top of injector follower.
  6. Hold push rod and tighten lock nut; check adjustment and readjust if necessary.
  7. Time the remaining injectors in the same manner.
  8. If no further tune-up required, use new gaskets and install valve rocker covers.
