Detroit Diesel — Test Injection Nozzles

Testing & diagnosis

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Keep hands away from the nozzle discharge. Fluid discharging from the nozzle under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause infection.

Procedure

  1. Clean the top of the engine to prevent dirt from entering any openings.
  2. Detach high-pressure tubing and leak-off lines, covering their opening ends with plastic caps.
  3. Remove mounting (crab) bolt and clamp. Pull nozzle assembly from the cylinder head.
  4. Cover nozzle openings with protector caps and protect nozzle tip.
  5. Remove injection nozzle gasket from nozzle bore and discard.
  6. Test nozzles for spray condition, opening pressure and leakage on hand test pump J29075-150.
  7. Check nozzle opening pressure, tip leakage, discharge pattern and fuel leak-off.
