Detroit Diesel — (Static) Timing Check - Injection Pump Static Timing

Adjustments

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Shut-off must be in the no-fuel position before proceeding.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect battery cables.
  2. Remove injection pump gear drive access cover from front of engine and discard O-ring.
  3. Rotate the engine in the normal operating direction until #1 piston is on the compression stroke with the damper pulley mark aligned with the correct timing mark.
  4. Thread plunger pin (J41162) into timing hole. If plunger pin enters the timing hole, injection timing is ok.
  5. If not, remove the plunger pin tool from gear and loosen the four capscrews which secure the gear to the injection pump.
  6. Rotate injection pump with socket wrench to align the small hole in the drive gear hub with the lock plate hole behind the pump drive hub.
  7. Torque the four capscrews using the correct torque specification, then re-thread the plunger pin; if it enters, timing is correctly set.
  8. Remove the plunger timing pin.
  9. Re-install gear cover using a new O-ring seal.
