Detroit Diesel — Replacement of Fuel Filter Element

Maintenance

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • To avoid engine damage, never open the high pressure fuel lines to bleed off trapped air.
  • Operate the engine in a well-ventilated area; engine exhaust is toxic.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect the batteries.
  2. Open and retighten the fuel tank filler cap to release pressure.
  3. Clean the outside of the fuel filter housing.
  4. Using a 36-mm socket, unscrew the cap and lift the filter element to drain.
  5. Remove the element from the cap; discard the element and the O-ring from the cap.
  6. Lubricate the new element rubber seal with fuel oil and insert into the housing, pushing down and rotating.
  7. Fill the fuel filter housing with clean fuel oil.
  8. Install a new O-ring on the cap and screw onto the housing; tighten to 25 N·m (18 lb·ft).
  9. Work the fuel hand pump until resistance is felt.
  10. Connect the batteries; crank the engine for 30 seconds at a time, waiting at least two minutes between attempts.
  11. Once started, idle at least one minute and check the filter housing for leaks.
