Detroit Diesel — Replace Coolant Filter Element (Spin-On Type)
Maintenance · Coolant filter and conditioner
From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Before you start
- Use caution to avoid damaging the hoses with the vise grip pliers.
- Do not exceed 40 psi (276 kPa) air pressure and wear adequate eye protection.
Procedure
- Close the filter inlet and outlet shut-off valves, or use vise grip pliers to clamp each hose closed during the change.
- Remove and discard the spin-on element. Clean the gasket seal on the filter cover.
- Remove the sludge and sediment and wash the filter body; dry it thoroughly with compressed air.
- Apply clean engine oil to the filter element gasket and install the new element. A 1/2 to 3/4 turn after gasket contact assures a positive leakproof seal.
- Open the inlet and outlet lines. Operate the engine and check for leaks; the top of the filter and outlet line should feel warm to the touch.
