Detroit Diesel — Removal of the Air Compressor

Repair & overhaul

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Ensure the air pressure has been released from the air lines before removing the lines.
  • Do not contact the drive gear to the engine block during removal; damage to the seal surface will cause oil leaks.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect the batteries and drain the coolant from the radiator.
  2. Relieve air pressure from the tanks.
  3. Disconnect the air lines to and from the compressor.
  4. Disconnect and drain the coolant supply and return lines at the air compressor.
  5. Remove the four bolts that secure the air compressor to the cylinder block.
  6. Slide the air compressor forward and remove from engine.
  7. Discard the air compressor gasket.
