Detroit Diesel — Removal of Electronic Unit Pump

Repair & overhaul

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do not pry up on the body of the pump if it does not come out easily; this will damage it.
  • Wear face shield or goggles to avoid injury from sudden release of high-pressure hose connection.

Procedure

  1. Remove the engine trim cover.
  2. Unscrew the fuel filter cap to allow fuel to drain back to tank.
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the electronic unit pump.
  4. Remove the high-pressure fuel line and transfer tube.
  5. Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel gallery inlet.
  6. Drain fuel from the fuel gallery outlet and remove return line fittings; discard seal rings.
  7. Remove inspection cover and attach engine barring tool J-46392.
  8. Loosen EUP mounting bolts about 6 mm but do not remove.
  9. Rotate crankshaft until the cam pushes the pump upwards.
  10. Release a locked/frozen pump using a small screwdriver blade under the flange.
  11. Remove both mounting bolts and pull the pump out of the cylinder block.
  12. Remove and discard the two O-rings on the pump shaft.
