Detroit Diesel — Pressure Test Cylinder Block (Method A)

Testing & diagnosis

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Procedure

  1. Seal off all water inlet and outlet holes air tight using plates, gaskets and pressure plugs from tool set J 24051.
  2. Install pressure plugs in each water opening and seal exhaust manifold openings if studs were removed.
  3. Apply hydrogenated vegetable type shortening to the seal rings and position in the seal ring grooves within each cylinder opening.
  4. Position a cylinder liner in each cylinder opening using care not to dislodge the seal rings.
  5. Place seven water seal rings in each set of block-to-head water inlet openings.
  6. Position a seal ring plate over the liner and seal rings and secure with seven bolts.
  7. Make sure all plugs and seals are tight and apply 40 psi (276 kPa) air pressure to the water jacket.
  8. Immerse the cylinder block for twenty minutes in a tank of water heated to 180-200°F (82-93°C) and observe for air bubbles.
  9. After the test, blow out the passages with dry compressed air and replace the block if leaks or cracks are found.
