Detroit Diesel — Non-Shielded Wire Splicing

Procedure

  1. Strip wire ends 1/4 inch.
  2. Re-twist any loose wire strands.
  3. Slide 2-inch pieces of heat shrink tube over wire for later use.
  4. Insert ends of wires into splice joint and crimp.
  5. Solder the wires and crimp joint together.
  6. Center heat shrink tube over splice and shrink.
  7. Wrap wires with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing. Maintain at least 1/2 wrap overlap.
  8. Once electrical tape or heat shrink tubing is in place, there should be no exposed wires.

Tools required

  • Crimp tool
  • Solder iron
  • Heat gun

Specs & torque values

  • 1/4 inch wire ends
  • 2-inch heat shrink tube pieces
  • Electrical tape or heat shrink tubing
  • 1/2 wrap overlap requirement
