Detroit Diesel — Measurement of Cylinder Liner Protrusion

Testing & diagnosis

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Correct cylinder liner protrusion is necessary to obtain a perfect seal when the head gasket is compressed by the cylinder head.
  • There are three different cylinder liner shim thicknesses available: 0.15 mm, 0.30 mm, and 0.50 mm.

Procedure

  1. Clean contact surfaces of cylinder block, cylinder liner, and measuring plate.
  2. Install liner and shim into block without seals.
  3. Install measuring plate J-46180 on block and liner; fasten with cylinder head bolts through spacers.
  4. Tighten cylinder head bolts 50 N·m (37 lb·ft).
  5. Install dial gauge with feeler in slot and touching block surface with preload; support gauge.
  6. Measure protrusion at four slots; record readings.
  7. Set dial gauge zero; move feeler to liner collar and record.
  8. Repeat for each slot until four measurements.
  9. If any protrusion is less than 0.230 mm or more than 0.330 mm, remove liner and inspect.
  10. Compare four measurements; if difference exceeds 0.02 mm, replace liner and repeat steps a–e.
  11. Remove bolts, spacers, and measuring plate.
