Detroit Diesel — Installation of Ring Gear

Repair & overhaul

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do not heat the gear over 204°C (399°F); excessive heat may destroy the original heat treatment.
  • Use lifting tools and heat-resistant gloves when handling heated components.

Procedure

  1. Support the flywheel, ring gear side up, on a solid flat surface.
  2. Rest the gear on a flat metal surface; heat the gear uniformly with an acetylene torch, keeping the torch moving.
  3. Use tongs to place the gear on the flywheel with the chamfer facing the same direction as the gear just removed.
  4. Tap the gear in place against the shoulder of the flywheel.
  5. If the gear cannot be tapped into place, remove it and apply additional heat.
  6. Once the ring gear is installed, install the flywheel.
  7. Install the transmission.
