Detroit Diesel — Installation of Rear Oil Seal Method A

Installation · Crankshaft rear oil seal

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Failure to lubricate seal I.D. can cause seal lip damage at startup.
  • Do not remove the plastic sealant coating from Series 92 seals.
  • Unidirectional seals must match engine rotation (arrow on seal case).

Procedure

  1. Install the flywheel housing.
  2. Place oil seal expander J 4239 against crankshaft end (use J 8682 for oversized seal).
  3. Lubricate the seal I.D., crankshaft or wear sleeve, and expander with clean SAE 30 or 40 oil (non-Teflon seals).
  4. Install Teflon lip seals dry.
  5. Slide seal over expander and onto crankshaft with lip toward engine.
  6. Remove seal expander and guide studs.
  7. Install crankshaft rear oil seal installer J 21112-B and guide studs J 9727-5.
  8. Drive seal in place until installer seats squarely on crankshaft butt.
  9. Remove installer and guide studs; remove excess sealant.
