Detroit Diesel — Installation of Piston and Connecting Rod Assembly

Repair & overhaul

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • DO NOT force the piston into the liner.
  • Ensure piston and connecting rod are oriented properly to avoid damage to the cooling nozzle.

Procedure

  1. If rings removed, install oil ring expander, oil ring, compression ring and fire ring in grooves, rotating 120° apart.
  2. Check ring end gaps against specification.
  3. Add clean engine oil to a clean pan.
  4. Place the piston and connecting rod assembly into the pan, combustion dome down.
  5. Coat the upper connecting rod bearing shell and piston skirt with clean engine oil.
  6. Coat inside of piston ring compressor tool with clean engine oil.
  7. Place piston dome side down and install piston ring compressor tool.
  8. Lubricate inside of cylinder liner with clean engine oil.
  9. Position crankshaft throw at bottom dead center for the cylinder being installed.
  10. Press the piston into the liner with care and moderate pressure.
  11. Remove the ring compressor; seat upper rod bearing on the crankshaft journal.
  12. Lubricate lower bearing shell; install bearing cap with numbers on the same side.
  13. Torque the connecting rod bolts (DD13: 190 N·m + 90°; DD15/DD16: 115 N·m + 180°).
  14. Install new piston spray nozzles and torque each bolt to 30 N·m.
  15. Measure piston protrusion; install new cylinder head gasket and cylinder head.
