Detroit Diesel — Installation of Cylinder Liner

Installation

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • The cylinder liner collar and collar seat must remain completely free of oil.
  • Do not overtighten the installation tool; this may deform the cylinder liner and make the installation tool more difficult to remove.
  • To prevent damage to the O-rings, the cylinder liner must be rotated during installation.
  • If installing the old cylinder liner, offset the reference marks 90 degrees from the previous ones.

Procedure

  1. Perform Measurement of Cylinder Liner Protrusion procedure.
  2. Install new O-rings, clean and dry, in cylinder block.
  3. Install Liner Seat D-Ring with flat surface against liner; do not over-stretch.
  4. Install new seat insert, clean and dry, into block counterbore.
  5. Apply light coating of engine oil to lower part of cylinder liner from O-ring area to bevelled area.
  6. When installing new liner, ensure diameter tolerance code corresponds to piston code.
  7. Install cylinder liner using installation tool J-46168.
  8. Tighten installation tool just enough to hold it inside liner without turning.
  9. Insert liner into block until it contacts O-rings; continue inserting past O-rings, keeping tool turning until seated.
  10. Remove installation tool from cylinder liner.
  11. Measure cylinder liner protrusion from block per Table 4.
  12. Measure inside diameter of cylinder liner and check out-of-round at three locations 60 degrees apart.
  13. Compare measurements; if they differ by more than maximum admissible out-of-round, remove liner and inspect O-rings and seating area.
  14. Replace damaged O-rings; check out-of-round again until it meets specifications.
  15. Install piston. Refer to "Installation of Piston".
