Detroit Diesel — Installation of Cylinder Head
Installation
From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Before you start
- Never install used compression gaskets or seals.
- Cylinder head bolts must not be replaced with ordinary bolts.
- Gaskets and seals not seated properly will cause leaks and blow-by.
- Do not apply adhesive directly to the seal.
Procedure
- Place a new color-coded compression gasket on each cylinder liner.
- Check liner height.
- Place support shims (adhesive side down) at each end of the cylinder block.
- Place new seal rings in water and oil hole counterbores (spray adhesive may hold seals).
- Install new oil seal in groove around the cylinder block perimeter (colored side away from cylinders).
- Install guide studs J 24748 in two outboard corner bolt holes.
- Attach lifting tool J 22062-01 and lower head over guide studs onto block.
- Apply International Compound No. 2 to head bolt threads and bolt head undersides.
- Install 6 point bolt and washer or 12 point washer faced bolt through each piloting sleeve.
- Finger-tighten bolts; install bolts on camshaft side to take up push rod spring tension.
- Remove guide studs and lifting fixture; install remaining bolts.
- Tighten bolts to 20-27 N·m with a speed handle.
- Tighten to 204 N·m (150 lb·ft) in increments of 41 N·m in sequence; hold 2-3 seconds.
- Back off each bolt at least 1/2 turn, tighten to 136 N·m, then rotate 90 degrees (one bolt at a time in sequence).
- Install fuel and water connectors between cylinder heads (12V/16V).
