Detroit Diesel — Installation and Adjustment of Wastegate Actuator
Installation · Turbocharger wastegate actuator
From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Before you start
- Proper installation and adjustment requires highly accurate digital air pressure gauge TLZ00101 or equivalent.
- If pressure is exceeded, reduce regulator output to 0 psi and increase slowly again.
- It is critical that swing-arm remains closed and actuator rod is not moved during adjustment. If rod is moved, it will slowly return and must be readjusted.
- Do not rotate actuator shaft when tightening jam nut.
Procedure
- Install heat shield and new wastegate actuator to bracket; tighten nuts to 12 N·m (9 lb·ft).
- Thread jam nut and adjusting rod onto actuator rod; do not tighten.
- Attach regulated shop air to digital pressure/regulator setup.
- Adjust regulator output knob until airflow stops.
- Turn digital pressure gauge on and set to zero.
- Attach digital pressure/regulator hose to wastegate actuator port.
- Connect actuator to regulated air supply; secure all hose connections, ensuring no leaks.
- Slowly adjust air regulator output to 25.5 psi (175 kPa). If pressure exceeded, reduce to 0 psi and increase slowly again.
- With wastegate fully closed, rotate adjusting rod so its hole aligns with swing-arm pin. Keep swing-arm closed; do not move actuator rod.
- Install adjusting rod on wastegate swing-arm pin; it should be perfectly aligned and slip over pin nearly effortlessly when properly adjusted.
- Install replacement E-clip onto wastegate lever pin.
- Tighten jam nut on actuator adjusting rod, taking care not to rotate actuator shaft. Torque jam nut to 5 N·m (4 lb·ft).
- Disconnect regulated air supply.
- Install turbocharger (section 6.7.3).
- Verify repair.
