Detroit Diesel — Install Governor (PGA Hydraulic Governor)
Installation
From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Before you start
- Do not seat the governor by means of the nuts; pre-load could lead to a drive shaft failure
Procedure
- Measure center-to-center distance of the vertical link assembly and set rod ends to measure approximately 4.1875"; leave upper lock nut loose.
- Install the gasket and boot retainer secured with three 5/16"-10 x 3/4" screws.
- Apply the protective boot and secure to the boot retainer with the gear clamp.
- Attach the gasket to the governor support housing cover.
- Lower the governor over the mounting studs ensuring the splined shaft and vertical link rod engage properly.
- Install lock washers and nuts on the mounting studs and torque to 58 lb-ft (79 N-m).
- Check that the hole in the spherical bushing of the vertical link rod end lines up with the hole in the power piston rod end.
- Remove governor cover and, using a power piston jack, raise the power piston until the scribed line lines up with the full load fuel scribe mark.
- Adjust the center-to-center distance of the vertical link until the rod end hole and power piston clevis hole are within ± .010".
- Install the clevis pin and retain with split pin; tighten the lock nut; remove jack and install governor cover.
- Slide the protective boot over the boot retainer and install the clamp.
- Connect all air and oil lines to appropriate connectors and plug in the electrical cable.
- Fill the governor with oil to the prescribed level by removing the cap on the governor cover.
