Detroit Diesel — Install Engine Front Cover

Procedure

1. Thread two aligning studs into the cylinder block to guide the front cover into position.
2. Make sure the cylinder block and front cover mating surfaces are clean and free of nicks and burrs.
3. Apply a thin coat of grease in the seal strip groove and place a new seal strip in the groove; cut away excess at the bottom.
4. Install the O-ring seals in the counterbores of the front cover at the water passages.
5. Apply a thin coat of spray adhesive on the exposed flat surfaces of the seal strip and O-rings.
6. Position the front cover in place over the aligning studs and up against the block.
7. Install the 1/2"-13 self-locking bolts and new 1/2" seal washers in the holes of the idler gear hubs (finger tight only).
8. Remove the aligning studs and install the remaining bolts and washers.
9. Tighten the 1/2"-13 bolts to 71-75 lb-ft and the 5/8"-11 bolts to 137-147 lb-ft.
10. Tighten the upper oil pan-to-cylinder block bolts to 45-50 lb-ft.
11. Install the upper oil pan-to-front cover bolts and tighten to 45-50 lb-ft.
12. Install the crankshaft outboard bearing support.
13. Install the front trunnion mounting support and trunnion; tighten the 5/8"-11 lock bolts to 137-147 lb-ft.
14. Install the crankshaft pulley and/or vibration damper, water pump, coolant filter and thermostat housing assemblies.
15. Install the engine front lifter bracket and the heat exchanger or engine cooling fan; fill the cooling system.
