Detroit Diesel — Install Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal (Former Seal, Flywheel Housing Installed)

Before you start
- Replace the rear oil seal sleeve whenever a new oil seal is installed.
Procedure
- Remove the cup plug from the end of the crankshaft.
- Remove the pipe plug located inside of the crankshaft end bore.
- Position the seal expander J 22605 (standard) or J 22766 (oversize) against the crankshaft end and thread retainer bolt J 22604-4A through the expander into the crankshaft pipe plug hole.
- Slide the seal, with the spring-loaded lip facing inward, over the seal expander and rear hub until the seal is up against the flywheel housing.
- Remove the seal expander and place the seal installer J 22604-B up against the seal; thread bolt J 22604-A through the installer into the crankshaft pipe plug hole.
- Draw up the bolt forcing the nut against the installer; turn the nut while tapping around the edge of the installer until the seal is seated.
- Install the pipe plug inside of the crankshaft end bore.
- Install the cup plug in the end of the crankshaft.
