Detroit Diesel — Install Air Shutdown Housing and Test Shutdown

Installation · Air shutdown assembly

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • A positive seal may not be obtained and the engine may continue to run after attempting a shut down if the gasket and screen are installed incorrectly.

Procedure

  1. Place the striker plate and gasket on the blower cover plate. Place a new gasket and screen assembly on the striker plate, screen side against the plate.
  2. Position the air shutdown housing on the gasket and screen assembly and secure with 7/16-14 bolts, lock washers and washers. Tighten to 46-50 lb-ft (62-68 N*m).
  3. Install the air inlet housing with a new gasket using eight 3/8-16 bolts, washers and lock washers. Tighten to 30-35 lb-ft (41-47 N*m). Connect the air inlet tubes; be sure all connections are air-tig
  4. On 12V or 16V, position the crossover shaft and manual shutdown lever. Close the valves in both shutdowns and center couplings with new cotter pins. Tighten coupling bolts to 21-26 lb-ft (28-35 N*m).
  5. Reset the air shutdown to the run position. Check mechanical operation before starting.
  6. Test: start and run the engine at slow idle and no load; increase speed to 600 rpm no load; trip the air shutdown. Engine speed must be reduced to at least 300 rpm.
  7. If a reduction to 300 rpm or less cannot be obtained, remove and check the air shutdown assembly.
  8. After a satisfactory test, drill and pin the couplings and linkage to the shafts with two roll pins each, using a 1/8 in diameter drill.
