Detroit Diesel — High Pressure Fuel Injector Line and Transfer Tube Installation

Before you start

  • Never use pliers or sharp-edged tools to bend injector lines
  • High pressure fuel lines should fit without tension
  • Discard old high pressure fuel line and transfer tube - do not re-use
  • If line installed incorrectly and torqued, remove and replace with new parts
  • Ensure damper is not touching other fuel lines or engine components
  • Do NOT loosen fuel injector line nuts for priming purposes
  • Do NOT re-torque high pressure fuel injector line nuts after installation

Procedure

  1. Ensure the damper is aligned correctly on the new high pressure fuel line - damper should be aligned vertically, parallel to fuel line exiting Electronic Unit Pump
  2. Verify the flat side of the damper points towards the Electronic Unit Pump
  3. Verify damper edge is 16 mm from edge of first element of fuel line exiting Electronic Unit Pump
  4. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the transfer tube O-ring
  5. Install the transfer tube into the cylinder head
  6. Torque the thrust nut to 45 N·m (33 lb·ft) using a 24 mm socket
  7. Align the new high pressure fuel injector line fittings to the transfer tube and unit pump
  8. Ensure fuel line is not installed backwards and properly seated
  9. Hand tighten the high pressure fuel injector line nut first at the unit pump, then at the transfer tube
  10. Gently move the fuel line back and forth while hand tightening to ensure proper seating
  11. Draw a vertical line with a highly visible marker along the front edge of both nuts and up the fuel line
  12. Tighten the fuel line nut at the unit pump end by turning through 120 degrees (1/3 full turn or two nut flats)
  13. Hold the transfer tube thrust nut and tighten the fuel line nut at transfer tube end by turning through 120 degrees
  14. Verify all six dampers on fuel injector lines are installed correctly
  15. Install the intake manifold
  16. Install the cylinder head covers
  17. Prime the fuel system
  18. Run the engine and check for leaks
  19. Shut down the engine

Tools required

  • 24 mm fuel line wrench (J-45063 or J-47484)
  • 17 mm fuel line wrench (J-47483)
  • 17 mm open end wrench
  • 24 mm socket
  • Highly visible marker

Specs & torque values

  • Thrust nut torque: 45 N·m (33 lb·ft)
  • Fuel line nut rotation at pump end: 120 degrees
  • Fuel line nut rotation at transfer tube: 120 degrees
  • Damper offset from fuel line edge: 16 mm
