Detroit Diesel — Fuel Flow Test

Testing & diagnosis · Fuel system

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the fitting at the fuel tank and hold the open end in a container.
  2. Start and run the engine at 1200 rpm and measure the fuel flow for one minute.
  3. At least .6 gallon of fuel should flow from the return hose per minute.
  4. Immerse the end of the hose in the fuel; air bubbles indicate air being drawn in on the suction side.
  5. If air is present, tighten all fuel line connections between the fuel tank and the fuel pump.
  6. If flow is below specification, service the fuel strainer, filter or pump.

Specs & values

  • At least 0.6 gallon per minute at 1200 rpm
