Detroit Diesel — Checking the Fuel Pump Driven Gear Bolt Torque

Testing & diagnosis

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • NOTICE: Do not apply a torque over 30 N·m (22 lb·ft); excessive torque can cause bolt/gear failure.

Procedure

  1. Remove the fuel pump.
  2. Set a clicker-type torque wrench to 30 N·m (22 lb·ft).
  3. Turn the torque wrench until it clicks; if no resistance and the shaft turns freely, proceed to further inspection.
  4. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper (refer to 1.11.1).
  5. Remove the idler pulley (refer to 8.1.9).
  6. Remove the air conditioner compressor pad (refer to 8.1.11).
  7. Remove the camshaft gear cover.
  8. Remove the bolt and use a puller to remove the gear.
  9. Check the mounting between bolt, gear, and shaft; replace damaged parts.
  10. Install gear and bolt with Loctite 271 sealant; hold with J-46187 and torque bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb·ft).
  11. Install camshaft front cover with eight bolts; torque to 50 N·m (37 lb·ft).
  12. Install the air conditioner compressor pad (refer to 8.1.12).
  13. Install idler pulley (refer to 8.1.10).
  14. Install the alternator and electrical connections.
  15. Install the crankshaft vibration damper (refer to 1.11.2).
