Detroit Diesel — Check Engine Oil Level

Maintenance · engine oil dipstick

From a Detroit Diesel service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do NOT overfill or underfill the crankcase with engine oil.
  • Do NOT fill beyond the maximum fill level on the dipstick, since overfilling may result in high oil consumption and possible severe engine or ATS damage.

Procedure

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground.
  2. Ensure engine off at least 20 minutes; preferably cold, so oil drains back to pan.
  3. Remove dipstick, disengage locking device, and wipe end with shop rag.
  4. Wait 30 seconds to allow crankcase pressure to dissipate and oil to settle.
  5. Reinstall dipstick and make sure it is fully inserted into the guide tube.
  6. Remove dipstick and read the oil level.
  7. If below minimum bend, add oil to maximum level. Do not overfill.
