Detroit Diesel — Breather Housing Seal Ring Repair and Installation

Before you start
- NOTE: For additional safety precautions, refer to the MBE 4000 Service Manual (6SE412) General Information section, Safety Instructions and Precautions.
- Do not re-use the seal ring.
Procedure
- 1. Disconnect the breather hose from the breather housing.
- 2. Disconnect the engine block tube and remove the breather housing from the flywheel housing.
- 3. Remove the seal ring from the groove in the breather housing (see Figure 2) and discard it. Do not re-use the seal ring.
- 4. Clean oil from the seal ring groove in the breather housing and from the mounting surface at the flywheel housing using a common solvent.
- 5. A new gasket set must be applied to the breather assembly. See figure 3 for part numbers.
- 6. Install the new breather housing gasket (P/N: 4760150080) between the breather housing and the flywheel housing using the center bolt of the breather housing. See Figure 4 for installation details.
- 7. Install the new seal ring (P/N: 4760170060) at the lower bolt of the breather housing. See Figure 4 for installation details.
- 8. Add the new washer (P/N: 200433013000) at the upper bolt of the breather housing to compensate for the thickness of the breather housing gasket - see Figure 5 for details.
- 9. Tighten all three M8X35 mm breather housing bolts to 25 Nm (19 lb-ft).
- 10. Connect the engine block tube to the breather housing.
- 11. Connect the breather hose to the breather housing.
- 12. Start the engine and check for leaks.
