Detroit Diesel — Assemble Cylinder Block (12V And 16V)

Before you start
- When tightening bolt (G), turn the bolt instead of the nut.
Procedure
- Place the rear cylinder block on a clean flat surface with the inter-block seal groove facing up.
- Check and clean the seal grooves and the entire top surface of the block.
- Secure cylinder block bore aligning tool J 22486 to the block with two main bearing caps; tighten bolts to 280-290 lb-ft.
- Apply Permatex High Tack Adhesive in the first 9" of the seal groove and place a new inter-block seal in the groove.
- Apply spray adhesive around the edge of the oil gallery opening and place a new seal ring in position.
- Apply spray adhesive around the edge of the exhaust port coolant holes and place a new water seal ring in position in both holes.
- Apply spray adhesive around the edge of the blower drive coupling hole and place a new air seal ring in position.
- Apply a thin coat of Loctite No. 515 Gasket Eliminator to the cylinder block as indicated.
- Attach lifting brackets to the rear end of the front cylinder block and position it over the rear block, engaging the diamond-shaped dowel pin.
- Place the rear main bearing cap of the front block in position and install the four main bearing cap bolts to 280-290 lb-ft.
- Move sled gage J 22273-01 across the bottom faces; mismatch must not exceed .003" on either side.
- Lubricate the threads and contact face of the cylinder block attaching bolts with International Compound No. 2.
- Install the bolts and washers, snug all bolts in sequence, then tighten to the torque chart values.
- Cut off the excess lengths of the block seal strip flush with the bottom face of the block.
- Remove the alignment tool and install the injector rack guard screens on 12 and 16 cylinder engines; tighten bolts to 13-17 lb-ft.
