Cummins/Onan — Withdrawing The Rotor From The Generator

Repair & overhaul · Generator rotor

From a Cummins/Onan service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan MDGDA, Cummins/Onan MDGDB

Before you start

  • Do not rest the rotor on the drive discs, blower or exciter.

Procedure

  1. Remove the generator adaptor casting on the drive disc end and the end plate on the bearing end.
  2. Cinch a lifting strap on the drive end of the rotor; lift the bearing end by hand and push toward the drive end until half the rotor core protrudes.
  3. Release the rotor weight and re-cinch the lifting strap around the middle of the rotor core.
  4. Withdraw the rotor until free of the stator, guiding both ends to prevent contact with stator windings.
  5. Rest the rotor in a cradle, supporting it on two pole faces - not on the drive discs, blower or exciter.
  6. Remove the retaining clip if the rotor shaft bearing is to be removed.
