Cummins/Onan — Starting the Generator Set

Operation

From a Cummins/Onan service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan HDZAA

Before you start

  • Exhaust gas is deadly; never occupy the vehicle while the set is running without a working carbon monoxide detector.

Procedure

  1. Perform the pre-start checks.
  2. Press and release the Display ON button on the remote operator panel.
  3. Wait for GEN OFF to appear; if priming is needed wait at least one minute before pressing START.
  4. Press and hold the START button until the generator set starts; it will make up to three attempts.
  5. Press the GEN OFF button to reset the control if the set does not start after three attempts.
  6. Let the set warm up a few minutes until running smoothly before connecting loads.
  7. Check for fuel, oil and exhaust leaks and stop immediately if a leak is found.
