Before you start

  • Exhaust gas presents hazard of severe personal injury or death.
  • Do not connect generator set exhaust to vehicle exhaust system.

Procedure

  1. Use only Onan UL/CSA tested mufflers with spark arresters.
  2. Keep exhaust system no closer than 3 inches (76 mm) from combustible material or shield/insulate to limit temperature rise.
  3. Extend exhaust system minimum 1 inch (25 mm) beyond perimeter of vehicle.
  4. Try to terminate tailpipe aft of generator set air intake to reduce exhaust recirculation.
  5. Use 1-3/8 inch I.D. 18 gauge rigid steel tubing for tailpipe.
  6. Use U-bolt type automotive muffler clamps marked 1-3/8 and double rubber U-shaped shock mounted hangers.
  7. If tailpipe extends beyond 1-1/2 feet (0.46 m) from muffler, attach an automotive tailpipe hanger for additional support.
  8. Support exhaust system at or near perimeter of vehicle.
  9. Mount muffler and tailpipe hanger brackets directly above component supported, not at an angle.
  10. Do not twist rubber sections of hangers.
  11. Do not use flexible exhaust tailpipe.
  12. Do not terminate exhaust under vehicle.
