Cummins/Onan DF Series — Engine Lubrication System Priming

Procedure

  1. Engine lubrication is drained prior to shipment.
  2. Remove oil inlet line from turbo-charger housing (Figure 16), fill bearing housing with clean engine lubricating oil, and replace line and secure.
  3. Fill crankcase to L (low) mark on dipstick (Figure 17).
  4. Remove plug from head of oil filter housing (Figure 16) and connect a hand or motor-driven priming pump from a source of clean lubricating oil to the plug boss in filter housing.
  5. Prime until a 30 psi (207 kPa) pressure is obtained.
  6. Disconnect wire from fuel solenoid valve (Figure 18), close throttle and crank engine while maintaining an external prime pressure of 15 psi (103 kPa), for 15 seconds.
  7. Remove external priming equipment, replace plug in filter housing and torque to 15 to 20 ft. lb. (20 to 27 Nm).
  8. Reconnect wire to fuel shut-off valve.
  9. Complete oil fill to H (high) mark on dipstick.

Tools required

  • Priming pump (hand or motor-driven)
  • Wrench

Specs & torque values

  • Clean engine lubricating oil
  • Oil filter housing plug torque: 15 to 20 ft. lb.
