Procedure

1. Place a new gasket over the exhaust manifold to muffler inlet pipe studs.
2. Lower the engine carefully into the chassis.
3. Make sure the studs on the exhaust manifold are aligned with the holes in the muffler inlet pipe and the dowels in the block engage the holes in the flywheel or converter housing.
4. On a truck with an automatic transmission, start the converter pilot into the crankshaft.
5. Install the converter housing to engine block and engine rear plate retaining bolts.
6. Remove the support from the transmission.
7. Remove the retainer securing the converter, then install the flywheel to converter bolts.
8. Tighten the bolts to specifications.
9. Install the converter housing inspection cover.
10. Connect the oil cooler inlet and outlet lines.
11. On a truck with a conventional drive or overdrive transmission, start the transmission main drive gear into the clutch disc.
12. It may be necessary to adjust the position of the transmission in relation to the engine if the input shaft will not enter the clutch disc.
13. If the engine hangs up after the shaft enters, turn the crankshaft slowly (transmission in gear) until the shaft splines mesh with the clutch disc splines.
14. Install the flywheel housing to engine block and engine rear plate retaining bolts.
15. Remove the support from the transmission.
16. Install the flywheel housing cover.
17. Position the engine ground strap and install the remaining engine rear plate retaining bolts.
18. Install the engine right and left front support bolt and nut, and tighten the nut to 35-45 foot-pounds torque.
19. Install the exhaust manifold to muffler inlet pipe retaining lockwashers and nuts, then tighten the nuts to 23-28 foot-pounds torque.
20. Install the inlet pipe to engine bracket bolt.
21. Connect the generator wires.
22. Remove the cap from the fuel tank line and connect the flexible fuel line.
23. Install the accelerator retracting spring.
24. Connect the transmission throttle control rod at the accelerator bellcrank (automatic transmission).
25. Connect the accelerator shaft to bellcrank rod at the bellcrank and the choke control cable at the carburetor.
26. Remove the tape from the carburetor air horn, then install the air cleaner.
27. Install the pulley, spacer, and fan, then install and adjust the drive belt(s).
28. Install the radiator.
29. Install the starter.
30. Connect the ignition coil primary wires, the oil pressure and water temperature sending unit wires, and the heater hoses.
31. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
32. Fill the crankcase with the proper grade and quantity of engine oil.
33. Install the hood.
34. Run the engine at fast idle and check all gaskets and hose connections for leaks.
35. On a truck with an automatic transmission, adjust the throttle linkage.
