Procedure

  1. Remove the hood and drain the cooling system and crankcase.
  2. Remove the radiator.
  3. Remove the air cleaner and tape the carburetor air horn closed.
  4. Disconnect the choke control cable at the carburetor, the accelerator shaft to bellcrank rod at the bellcrank.
  5. Disconnect the transmission throttle control rod at the bellcrank (automatic transmission).
  6. Remove the accelerator retracting spring.
  7. Disconnect the exhaust manifold at the muffler inlet pipe and remove the inlet pipe to engine bracket bolt.
  8. Disconnect the flexible fuel line at the fuel tank line and install a cap on the fuel tank line.
  9. Disconnect the generator wires at the generator.
  10. Remove the engine ground strap at the flywheel or converter housing.
  11. Remove the flywheel or converter housing to engine block and engine rear plate retaining bolts.
  12. Remove the drive belt(s), then remove the fan, spacer, and pulley.
  13. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine.
  14. Disconnect the water temperature and oil pressure sending unit wires at the sending units.
  15. Disconnect the coil primary wires.
  16. Remove the starter.
  17. On a truck with a conventional drive or overdrive transmission, remove the flywheel housing inspection cover and support the transmission with a jack.
  18. On a truck with an automatic transmission, support the transmission with a jack, then remove the converter housing lower access cover and the flywheel to converter bolts.
  19. Secure the converter assembly in the housing.
  20. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler inlet and outlet lines at the engine.
  21. Attach the engine lifting hook.
  22. Remove the engine right and left front support to frame bracket bolts.
  23. Lift the engine out of the engine compartment and install it on a work stand.
