Cummins/Onan 6.5NH - 3CR / 6000 A — Testing Field Windings for Grounds and Open Circuits

Testing & diagnosis · Field coils

For the Cummins/Onan 6.5NH - 3CR / 6000 A, from the Cummins/Onan service manual.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan NH engine

Procedure

  1. Use a test lamp set for all tests except short circuit tests.
  2. Disconnect all external leads from their terminals and tag and mark each lead.
  3. For a ground test, touch one prod to the terminal of one lead and the other prod to the generator frame; if the lamp lights, the coil assembly is grounded.
  4. For an open circuit test, touch one prod to one coil winding lead terminal and the other prod to the other lead(s) of that winding; if the lamp does not light, the winding is open.
  5. Repair connections or replace the entire assembly if the fault is inside the coil.
