Cummins/Onan — 4. Starting and Running the Generator Set

For these Cummins/Onan models: EGMBT, EGMBT (P4500), EGMBU, EGMBU (P5000E), EGMBU (P5000e), P24500 (Spec A), P5000e (Spec A).

Procedure

  1. 4.3.1 Using the Electric Starter To use the electric starter,
  2. 1. Open the fuel valve.
  3. 2. Pull the choke rod out to close the choke if the engine is cold.
  4. 3. Press and hold the Start/On/Off switch in the START position until the engine starts. The switch will return to the ON position when released. Gradually push the choke rod in as the engine warms up.
  5. 4. Let the engine warm up for a few minutes before connecting tools or appliances. See Powering Tools and Appliances.
  6. 4.3.2 Using the Recoil Starter
  7. 1. Open the fuel valve (see Figure 6).
  8. 2. Pull the choke rod out to close the choke if the engine is cold (see Figure 7).
  9. 3. Verify that the On/Off switch is in the ON position.
  10. 4. With one hand on the generator, grip the recoil handle with the other hand and pull it out quickly and smoothly. Repeat as necessary until the engine starts (see Figure 8).
  11. 5. As the engine warms up, gradually push the choke rod in.
