Chrysler — Alignment of Clutch Housing

Adjustments

From a Chrysler operator's manual covering: IND. 52, IND. 53, IND. 54, IND. 56. Check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Failure to align clutch housing may result in hard shifting of transmission and possibility of gear disengagement.

Procedure

  1. Inspect housing face for dirt and burrs; remove burrs with file, clean both surfaces.
  2. Start two dowel pins in block from front so they protrude beyond machined face; install clutch housing.
  3. Install clutch housing to block cap screws just snug enough to allow shifting with mallet.
  4. Install fixture C-870 to flywheel attaching bolts (or crankshaft flange bolts for fluid drive).
  5. Install indicator C-435 or C-430.
  6. Rotate crankshaft and check inside diameter of housing bore; should not vary more than .005 inch per revolution.
  7. If alignment necessary, remove dowel pins and tap housing until within tolerance.
  8. Tighten housing cap screws to 30 to 35 foot-pounds torque.
  9. Change dial indicator position and check rear face of housing; tolerance must be within .002 inch.
  10. If alignment was necessary, ream dowel pin holes with Tool C-860 and install .512 inch oversize dowel pins.
