Before you start

  • No more than three rocker assembly head bolts should be removed at a time
  • Special care to prevent housing distortion
  • After cross-head installation, clearance check is imperative
  • Locating pin ensures proper alignment
  • studs do not
  • Eye protection must be worn when using air pressure
  • Fuel lines must not contact engine or brake components
  • Support brackets fix housing height
  • do not force up or down
  • Ensure clearance between crossheads and cover bases
  • Over tightening throttle switch could cause breakage

Procedure

  1. Identify engine model and examine valve cover identification tag
  2. Thoroughly clean engine top, remove crossover pipe and rocker covers
  3. Loosen and remove fuel lines, place in protective bag
  4. Loosen intake and exhaust rocker arm adjusting screw lock-nuts
  5. Remove front rocker shaft group from engine
  6. Remove Caterpillar exhaust rocker arm adjusting screws, replace with hardened Pacbrake screws
  7. Remove exhaust valve crossheads and install into Pacbrake crosshead
  8. Apply clean oil to crosshead bore, install and adjust per Caterpillar manual
  9. Remove front dowel pin, install Pacbrake oil supply adapter with 0.020 gap
  10. Remove rear locating pin and replace with longer Pacbrake pin
  11. Use air pressure to remove oil from holddown bolt holes
  12. Re-install front rocker assembly ensuring push-tubes are in place
  13. Install two Pacbrake studs with washers in outside locations
  14. Center rocker assembly and torque studs and bolts to 200 lbs.ft then 330 lbs.ft
  15. Repeat on rear rocker assembly
  16. Remove Caterpillar head bolts and install support bracket
  17. Set intake and exhaust valves per Caterpillar manual
  18. Re-install fuel tubes and torque to specifications
  19. Install housing, ensure location pin is properly engaged
  20. Torque housing holddown nuts in two steps: 50 lb.ft then 100 lb.ft
  21. Perform slave piston adjustment with feeler gauge
  22. Install valve cover bases and spacers
  23. Install solenoid wire assembly
  24. Start engine and idle 5-10 minutes
  25. Depress solenoid 5-6 times to purge air from brake housings
  26. Install valve covers and torque holddown screws
  27. Install electrical wiring per system type (Mechanical, PEEC II, or PEEC III)

Tools required

  • Vernier caliper or micrometer
  • Slide hammer pin extractor
  • Air pressure tool
  • 9/16 crowfoot wrench
  • Feeler gauge
  • Torque wrench

Specs & torque values

  • P34605 Housing Assembly Group Front
  • P34610 Housing Assembly Group Rear
  • Torque specs: 200 lbs.ft (270 N.m) then 330 lbs.ft (450 N.m)
  • Feeler gauges: 0.060 (P7446), 0.080 (P34670), 0.070 (P13184)
