Caterpillar EMCP 3 — Generator Underfrequency Warning - Troubleshooting
Testing & diagnosis · EMCP 3
For the Caterpillar EMCP 3, from the Caterpillar service manual.
Applies to: Caterpillar EMCP 3
Procedure
- Talk to the operator to determine the conditions that caused the underfrequency condition.
- If cause is known and repaired, reset the genset, resume operation and verify.
- View Generator Underfrequency and Generator Desired Engine Speed Request setpoints; compare against default setpoints.
- If setpoints are not correct, reprogram them, reset the genset and verify.
- EUI engines: verify generator output frequency can be viewed and adjusted from the EMCP 3 Display Screen.
- Adjust generator output frequency to meet site requirements and verify.
- MUI engines: with engine running, adjust output frequency using the speed potentiometer.
- Disconnect speed potentiometer from terminals "11" and "12" on the 2301A Governor; measure its resistance.
- Check the speed potentiometer harness for an open circuit; resistance should be 5 ohms or less.
- EUI engines: check the J1939 Data Link between the EMCP 3 and the Engine ECM.
- Check the three fuses on the AC voltage inputs of the EMCP 3; fuses should not be open.
- Open the circuit breaker or remove load, start and run the genset, measure voltage between all three AC input fuses.
- Shut down engine, remove the EMCP 3 harness connector, inspect connector and wires to voltage input fuses.
Specs & values
- Speed potentiometer resistance should be adjustable between 0 and 100 ohms
- Harness resistance should be 5 ohms or less
- Line to line voltage should measure the rated voltage of the genset
