Caterpillar EMCP 3 — Generator Overfrequency Warning Troubleshooting

Testing & diagnosis · EMCP 3

For the Caterpillar EMCP 3, from the Caterpillar service manual.

Applies to: Caterpillar EMCP 3

Procedure

  1. Ask operator about cause; if known and repaired, reset genset and resume.
  2. Compare Generator Overfrequency and Desired Engine Speed Request setpoints to default setpoints.
  3. EUI engines: verify generator output frequency can be viewed and adjusted on EMCP 3 display.
  4. MUI engines: adjust frequency with speed potentiometer; if not adjustable, go to step 5.
  5. Shut down engine; disconnect speed potentiometer from 2301A Governor terminals 11 and 12; measure resistance (0-100 ohms).
  6. Check speed potentiometer harness open circuit; terminal 11 and 12 to potentiometer resistance should be 5 ohms or less.
  7. EUI engines: check J1939 Data Link wiring between EMCP 3 and Engine ECM.
  8. Check three fuses on AC voltage inputs of EMCP 3; they should not be open.
  9. Open circuit breaker, start engine, measure line-to-line voltage at all three AC input fuses; should equal rated voltage.
  10. Shut down engine; remove EMCP 3 harness connector; inspect connector and wires between voltage inputs and fuses.
