Before you start

  • Wear eye protection and do not expose your face over the engine area; oil splashing could cause personal injury.

Procedure

  1. Start the engine and allow it to run 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. With the engine at low idle, manually depress the solenoid armature five or six times in succession.
  3. Inspect the installation for abnormal oil or fuel leakage and component interference; correct any problem found at this time.
  4. If the engine fails to start or misfires, prime the fuel system.
  5. Be sure the fuel line valve is open and the engine shutoff control is off.
  6. Loosen the fuel line nuts one at a time at the pump housing; unlock the fuel priming pump.
  7. Operate the priming pump until clear fuel flows from the fuel pump; tighten the fuel line nut.
  8. Repeat for each fuel line, then lock the fuel priming pump.
  9. If misfire or smoke continues, with the engine running loosen fuel line nuts one at a time until free of air bubbles; tighten to 30 lbft (41 N·m).
