Before you start

  • Turbocharger bearing failures can cause large quantities of oil to enter air inlet and exhaust systems.
  • Do not continue operation if bearing failure with significant performance loss.

Procedure

  1. Remove exhaust outlet and air inlet piping. Visually inspect for oil. Clean interior of pipes.
  2. Turn compressor and turbine wheels by hand. Assembly should turn freely. Inspect for contact with housing. If contact, turbocharger must be reconditioned.
  3. Check compressor wheel for cleanliness. Dirt on blade side indicates air filtering issue. Oil on back side may indicate failed oil seal.
  4. Inspect bore of turbine housing for corrosion.
  5. Clean turbocharger housing with standard shop solvents and soft bristle brush.
  6. Fasten air inlet and exhaust outlet piping.
