Procedure
- 36. Remove spark plug cables from spark plug terminals. Always pull on the boot at the terminal end or
- 37. Thoroughly clean area around spark plugs to keep dirt out of the combustion chamber.
- 38. Remove spark plugs from cylinder heads using a 5/8 inch spark plug socket.
- 39. Turn engine crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until piston of cylinder #1 is at Top Dead
- 40. To ensure that tappet is not resting on compression
- 41. Remove four screws with washers to release valve
- 42. Insert feeler gauge between rocker arm and intake
- 43. If adjustment is necessary, proceed as follows:
- A. Obtain Briggs & Stratton Valve Adjustment Set
- B. Place socket (13mm hex) over locknut.
- C. While holding socket on locknut, insert hex (5mm) or TORX (T-40) bit through hole to engage
- D. Rotate socket CCW to loosen locknut, and slightly turn adjuster screw in a CW or CCW direction
- E. While holding hex or TORX bit on adjuster screw to prevent rotation, turn socket in a CW
- F. Remove tools and use feeler gauge to check valve clearance. Repeat steps as necessary until
- G. Tighten locknut to 70 in-lbs (8 Nm). Check valve clearance one more time to verify that adjusting
- 44. Insert feeler gauge between rocker arm and exhaust valve stem. Verify that exhaust valve clearance
- 45. Start four screws with washers to install valve cover of cylinder #1.
- 46. Alternately tighten valve cover screws to 70 in-lbs (8 Nm) using a crosswise pattern.
- 47. Repeat steps 39-46 on cylinder #2.
- 48. Install spark plugs into cylinder heads and finger tighten until snug. Tighten spark plugs to 180 in-lbs
