Procedure

  1. 1. Remove and ground spark plug wires. Remove air cleaner cartridge, check for proper servicing. Check gaskets, pre-cleaner and cartridge for damage. Check oil level and drain oil. Remove oil ‘filter. : Remove blower housing, inspect rewind assembly, when so equipped. Clean cooling fins and entire engine. Check governor, linkage and springs for damage, wear, also check adjustment. Remove intake manifold and carburetor, disassemble carburetor and inspect for wear or damage. Wash in solvent. Replace gaskets and parts as necessary. Reinstall carburetor on manifold. Set initial adjustment

  3. 10. | Install flywheel and set air gap. Check for spark with tool #19368, tester.
  4. 11. | Remove cylinder heads. Remove carbon. Check gaskets. Inspect valves for seating
  5. 12. | Reinstall cylinder heads using new gaskets. Tighten to specified torque. Adjust valve clearance. Set spark plug gaps.
  6. 13. | Reinstall intake manifold using new gaskets.
  7. 14. | Reinstall blower housing.
  8. 15. | Install new oil filter. Replace oil and fuel.
  9. 16. | Adjust equipment control and cables, if used, for correct operation. Remove spark plugs and clean or replace. Remove flywheel. Check flywheel key. Check for oil seal leakage, both flywheel and PTO sides. Check coils. Inspect all wires for breaks and/or damaged insulation. Be sure ground wires do not touch flywheel. Check ground wire and stop switch connection.
  10. 17. | Service air cleaner pre-cleaner and cartridge, or replace.
  11. 18. | Check muffler for restrictions or damage.
  12. 19. | Start engine and bring up to operating temperature. Then, adjust carburetor mixture and engine top speed. GENERAL INFORMATION Overhaul Procedure OVERHAUL PROCEDURE The Overhaul Procedure which follows is intended to help you to become accustomed to a systematic method of re- pairing Briggs & Stratton OHV engines. Naturally these steps could be rearranged in different order but efficiency is obtained when the repair operations are performed in the same sequence every time. The exact procedure will vary according to the engine model being repaired. The Overhaul Procedure can also be used as an index. For information on how to perform most operations listed, refer to the section number shown. Be careful to locate the instructions covering the specific model being repaired. SEC. DISASSEMBLE SEC. DISASSEMBLE (cont’d.) Drain oil - Remove oil filter 5 | Governor control bracket Spark plugs. Clean or replace 6 | Check valve clearances Air cleaner assembly 6 | Cylinder shields Fuel tank and bracket assembly — Rocker arms. Push rods. Cylinder heads (if equipped) 6 | Valves, springs and seals Fuel pump and bracket (if equipped) Inspect and check guides and seats 10 | Check crankshaft end play Remove burrs from crankshaft extension 2 | Rotating screen (if equipped) Blower housing 7 | Rewind starter (if equipped) 10 | Crankcase cover - Inspect and check 12 | Exhaust manifold, muffler(s) bearings, Remove oil seal 3 | Intake manifold and carburetor 10 | Cam gear and tappets - Inspe
