Before you start

  • After mechanical work, turn rocker arm adjusting screws upward (counterclockwise) far enough to prevent pistons striking valves when cranking.

Procedure

  1. Run engine to minimum 160 F (344 K), then stop.
  2. Clean cylinder head cover area; remove breather tube, capscrews, washers and cover.
  3. Crank until No. 6 exhaust valve is almost closed and intake valve starts to open.
  4. Check and adjust intake and exhaust lash for No. 1 cylinder.
  5. Use 0.015 in (0.38 mm) feeler gauge; slight drag indicates correct lash.
