Procedures

12
Adjust Ignition Module Air Gap adjustment

⚠ Do not attempt to set air gap with a business card or folded microfiche card.

Tools: Feeler gauge 0.30 mm (0.012 in.)

  1. Turn flywheel magnet away from module position.
  2. Attach module to mounting legs, pull away from flywheel, tighten screws temporarily.
  3. Rotate flywheel so magnet is centered under module.
  4. Position a 0.30 mm (0.012 in.) feeler gauge between magnet and all three legs of module.
  5. Loosen mounting screws, allow magnet to pull module down against feeler gauge, retighten screws.
  6. Rotate flywheel to remove feeler gauge, recheck specified gap under each leg; torque module screws to 4.0 N·m (35 in. lb.).
Carburetor Low Idle Fuel Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Do not attempt to remove limiter caps.

Tools: tachometer

  1. Place throttle control into idle or slow position; adjust low idle speed to 1200 RPM.
  2. Turn low idle fuel adjusting needle out (counterclockwise) until engine speed decreases (rich); note position.
  3. Turn needle in (clockwise) until engine speed decreases (lean); note position.
  4. Set adjusting needle midway between rich and lean settings.
  5. Repeat for other low idle adjustment needle on two-barrel carburetor.
  6. Recheck/adjust low idle speed to specified setting.
Governed Idle Speed Adjustment (If equipped) adjustment

Tools: Tachometer

  1. Hold governor lever away from carburetor so throttle lever is against idle speed screw; start and warm engine, adjust screw to approximately 1200 RPM.
  2. Release governor lever; turn governed idle adjustment screw to obtain manufacturer's recommended idle speed (1500-1800 RPM).
  3. Move throttle lever to wide-open/full throttle and turn high speed screw to obtain intended high speed no-load RPM.
Governor Initial Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Do not tamper with governor setting. Overspeed is hazardous and could cause personal injury.

Tools: Torque wrench, Long thin rod or tool

  1. Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor arm and throttle lever on carburetor.
  2. Loosen nut holding governor lever to cross shaft.
  3. Move governor lever toward carburetor as far as it will go (wide open throttle) and hold in this position.
  4. Insert a long thin rod or tool into hole on cross shaft and rotate shaft counterclockwise (viewed from end) as far as it will turn, then torque nut to 6.8 N·m (60 in. lb.).
Governor Initial Adjustment Procedure adjustment

⚠ Do not tamper with governor setting. Overspeed is hazardous and could cause personal injury.

Tools: Long thin rod or tool

  1. Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor arm and throttle lever.
  2. Loosen nut holding governor lever to cross shaft.
  3. Move governor lever toward carburetor as far as it will go (wide open throttle) and hold.
  4. Insert a long thin rod into hole on cross shaft and rotate shaft counterclockwise (viewed from end) as far as it will turn, then torque nut to 6.8 N·m (60 in. lb.).
Governor Sensitivity Adjustment adjustment
  1. To increase sensitivity, move spring closer to governor lever pivot point.
  2. To decrease sensitivity, move spring away from governor lever pivot point.
Ignition Module Air Gap Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Feeler gauge 0.30 mm (0.012 in.)

  1. Turn flywheel magnet away from module.
  2. Attach module loosely to mounting legs.
  3. Rotate flywheel so magnet centered under module.
  4. Place 0.30 mm (0.012 in.) feeler gauge between magnet and all three legs.
  5. Loosen screws; let magnet pull module against gauge; retighten.
  6. Torque screws to 4.0 N·m (35 in. lb.); recheck gap.
Low Idle Fuel Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Engines will have fixed low idle or limiter caps; do not attempt to remove limiter caps.

  1. Place throttle in idle/slow; adjust low idle speed to 1200 RPM.
  2. Turn low idle fuel adjusting needle out (counterclockwise) until speed decreases (rich); note position.
  3. Turn needle in (clockwise) until speed decreases (lean); note position.
  4. Set adjusting needle midway between rich and lean settings.
  5. Repeat on other low idle adjustment needle (two-barrel only).
  6. Recheck/adjust low idle speed to specified setting.
Low Idle Speed (RPM) Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Tachometer

  1. Make adjustment only after engine has warmed up.
  2. Place throttle control into idle or slow position.
  3. Turn low idle speed adjusting screw in or out to obtain 1200 RPM (± 75 RPM).
TPS Initialization Procedure (24 Pin MSE 1.0 ECU) adjustment

Tools: Tachometer, Jumper wire

  1. Warm engine 5-10 minutes so oil temperature is above 55°C (130°F).
  2. Move throttle to idle; allow engine to stabilize one minute.
  3. Install heavy rubber band around throttle lever and manifold boss.
  4. Adjust idle speed to 1500 RPM using tachometer.
  5. Shut off engine.
  6. Connect jumper from TPS initialization pin #24 (violet) to battery voltage pin (red).
  7. Turn ignition on; MIL blinks quickly ~3 seconds then stays off.
  8. Remove jumper and rubber band; clear learned adjustments.
Compression Test (Command Twins) diagnostic

Tools: Compression gauge

  1. Perform on a warm engine. Clean dirt away from base of spark plug(s).
  2. Be sure choke is off and throttle is wide open during test.
  3. Compression should be at least 160 psi and should not vary more than 15% between cylinders.
Crankcase Vacuum Test diagnostic

⚠ Rotating Parts can cause severe injury. Stay away while engine is in operation.

Tools: Water manometer or vacuum/pressure gauge

  1. Insert rubber stopper into oil fill hole with pinch clamp installed; connect hose between stopper and manometer tube; leave other tube open; water level at 0 line; pinch clamp closed.
  2. Start engine and run no-load high speed.
  3. Open clamp and note water level; engine side should be minimum 10.2 cm (4 in.) above open side.
  4. Close pinch clamp before stopping engine.
