Procedures

12
Drive Belt Tension Adjustment adjustment

Tools: belt tension gauge

  1. Check belt tension with belt tension gauge.
  2. Loosen alternator and/or governor mounting and adjusting bolts.
  3. Move component away from engine until correct tension.
  4. Retighten mounting bolts.
Electronic Governor Adjustment adjustment

Tools: frequency meter or tachometer

  1. Verify actuator swivel fully threaded and secured.
  2. Back out idle adjust screw.
  3. Snap linkage back to idle and listen for click.
  4. Turn threaded rod 1/2 turn at a time until sharp click.
  5. Set actuator rod about 90 degrees to throttle lever at no load rated rpm.
  6. Tighten ball joint locknuts.
  7. Select 50 Hz or 60 Hz with jumper; do not jumper for 60 Hz.
  8. Adjust gain at full load until stable at all loads.
Gasoline Carburetor Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Do not force idle speed mixture screw.

  1. With engine stopped, turn idle mixture screw in until lightly seated.
  2. Turn idle mixture screw out 1-3/4 turns.
  3. Start engine and run at no load about 5 minutes.
  4. Adjust idle mixture screw ±3/8 turn for best stability.
  5. Stop generator set.
  6. Adjust governed speed via electronic governor if incorrect.
Gasoline Choke Adjustment adjustment
  1. Loosen screws securing choke bracket.
  2. Shift choke assembly position.
  3. Set choke plate within 10 degrees of full-closed at about 21 C (70 F).
LP/Natural Gas Conversion adjustment
  1. Remove retaining screw from underside of gas regulator.
  2. Remove retainer and internal spring for LP gas operation.
  3. Reinstall retaining screw.
  4. Save spring and retainer for conversion back to natural gas.
  5. For natural gas, replace spring and retainer.
  6. Rotate spring retainer to obtain 5 in. water column at full load.
12-Lead Separate Excitation diagnostic

⚠ Observe hazardous voltage precautions.

Tools: DC ammeter, 10-amp fuse, 12-volt automotive battery

  1. Disconnect all leads from voltage regulator.
  2. Remove exciter field F1 and F2 leads from terminal strip.
  3. Connect ammeter and 10-amp fuse in series with F1 to 12-volt battery.
  4. Record ammeter reading; expected battery voltage divided by exciter resistance.
  5. Start engine and check ammeter remains stable.
  6. Check AC output across stator leads against specification.
  7. If rotor and stator test good, replace voltage regulator.
4-Lead Separate Excitation diagnostic

⚠ Observe hazardous voltage precautions.

Tools: DC ammeter, 10-amp fuse, 12-volt automotive battery

  1. Disconnect all leads from voltage regulator.
  2. Connect DC ammeter, 10-amp fuse, and 12-volt battery to brush leads.
  3. Record ammeter reading; expected battery voltage divided by rotor resistance.
  4. Start engine and check ammeter remains stable.
  5. Check AC output across stator leads against specification.
  6. If rotor and stator test good, replace voltage regulator.
PowerBoost III/IIIE Voltage Regulator Test diagnostic

⚠ Do not touch voltage regulator heat sink when testing.

Tools: Variable transformer 0--140 V, AC voltmeter, 120-volt 100-watt lamp

  1. Connect variable transformer, AC voltmeter, regulator, and 120-volt lamp.
  2. Set variac to zero and plug in.
  3. Increase to 100 volts; lamp should light.
  4. Increase to 120 volts; lamp should go out.
  5. If lamp behavior fails, replace voltage regulator.
Battery Cleaning maintenance

⚠ Do not let cleaning solution enter battery cells.

Tools: wire brush

  1. Disconnect cables; remove negative lead first.
  2. Remove corrosion with wire brush from posts and connectors.
  3. Clean battery and cables with baking soda and water solution.
  4. Flush with clean water and wipe dry.
  5. Reconnect cables and coat terminals with petroleum jelly.
Battery Electrolyte Level Check maintenance

⚠ Do not add fresh electrolyte.

  1. Remove filler caps.
  2. Check electrolyte level is up to bottoms of filler holes.
  3. Refill with distilled or clean tap water as necessary.
  4. Tighten filler caps.
Battery Specific Gravity Check maintenance

Tools: battery hydrometer

  1. Draw electrolyte from each cell into hydrometer.
  2. Read number at top of electrolyte level.
  3. Fully charged is 1.260 at 26.7 C (80 F).
  4. Charge battery if below 1.215 at 26.7 C (80 F).
  5. Correct reading for electrolyte temperature if needed.
Cooling System Drain and Refill maintenance

⚠ Allow engine to cool before removing pressure cap.

  1. Remove radiator cap and open radiator petcock and engine block drain.
  2. Drain coolant.
  3. Close drain plug and petcock.
  4. Fill radiator with recommended coolant mixture.
  5. Run engine until thermostat opens and upper hose is hot.
  6. Stop engine, allow cooling, and add coolant to 19--38 mm below filler neck.
