Procedures
12Magnetic Pickup Adjustment adjustment
- Place the generator set master switch in the OFF/RESET position.
- Verify the flywheel is not rotating. Loosen the jam nut.
- Turn in the magnetic pickup until the pole face bottoms on the ring gear tooth.
- Back out the magnetic pickup 1/4 to 1/2 turn providing a 0.35--0.71 mm (0.014--0.028 in.) air gap.
- Tighten the jam nut without moving the magnetic pickup.
Volt/Hz Potentiometer Adjustment adjustment
Tools: 100-watt light bulb, voltmeter, frequency meter
- Turn the generator set master switch to OFF/RESET.
- Make the single- or three-phase sensing selection at switch #2.
- Turn the stability potentiometer fully counterclockwise.
- Connect a 100-watt light bulb across terminals V0 and V7 on the controller terminal strip.
- Start the generator set and adjust the stability potentiometer until minimum light bulb flicker is obtained.
- Make the frequency selection (50 or 60 Hz) at switch #1.
- Select the bias switch for No Bias Input.
- Adjust engine speed to the desired cut-in frequency (57.5--58.0 Hz for 60 Hz models or 47.5--48.0 Hz for 50 Hz models).
- Rotate the volts/Hz adjustment potentiometer clockwise until voltage begins to drop.
- Adjust engine speed to obtain full load engine speed of 1800 rpm (60 Hz) or 1500 rpm (50 Hz).
Controller Resetting (550 Controller, Following System Shutdown or Warning) diagnostic
⚠ Read the Safety Precautions and Instructions section before proceeding.
- Move the generator set master switch to the AUTO position if not already done.
- Silence the alarm horn by pressing the alarm off key.
- Disconnect the generator set load using the line circuit breaker or automatic transfer switch.
- Correct the cause of the fault shutdown or warning.
- Start the generator set by moving the master switch to OFF/RESET and then to RUN.
- Test operate the generator set to verify correction of the shutdown cause.
- Move the master switch to OFF/RESET to stop the generator set.
- Move the master switch to the AUTO position.
- Silence the alarm horn by pressing the alarm off key.
- Reconnect the generator set load via the line circuit breaker or automatic transfer switch.
LED Circuit Board (Flashlight) Test diagnostic
⚠ Do not expose the photo transistor circuit board to any external light source; exposure to light causes high voltage. Place black electrical tape over the LED before starting the set.
Tools: flashlight, voltmeter
- Remove the junction box panels from the generator end and remove the photo transistor board/LED board cover.
- With the generator set running at no load, shine a flashlight on the exposed photo transistor board.
- Observe the AC output voltmeter; high AC output voltage indicates the SCR assembly and photo transistor board are functioning.
- With the set running, approximately 1--2 volts DC should be observed at 3B (+) and 5B (--) at the LED board; the reading should drop when the flashlight is applied.
Speed Sensor Test with Generator Set Running diagnostic
⚠ Controller leads must remain connected to the speed sensor terminals during the test; slide leads only enough to expose connection for test leads.
Tools: DC voltmeter
- With the master switch in OFF/RESET, connect a DC voltmeter between the positive (+) lead (wire 24) and ground (wire 2); reading should be approximately 8--12 VDC.
- Place the master switch in the RUN position to start the generator set.
- With the set running, place the voltmeter negative probe on the 0 terminal (wire 16, white) and positive probe on the positive (+) terminal (wire 24, red); reading should be approximately 7--12 VDC.
- Place the master switch in OFF/RESET to stop the generator set.
- If a signal is present, check continuity of wires 2, 16, and 24 between the controller P1 connector and the speed sensor leads.
Speed Sensor Test with Separate 12 VDC Source diagnostic
Tools: DC voltmeter, 12-volt battery or DC power supply, flat piece of iron or steel
- Place the generator set master switch in the OFF/RESET position.
- Disconnect the speed sensor leads.
- Connect the speed sensor, DC voltmeter, and DC voltage source as shown in the manual.
- Touch the sensing surface with a flat piece of iron or steel at least 4.1 cm (1/4 cu. in.) in size.
- The DC voltmeter reading should equal the source voltage, approximately 12 VDC.
- Remove the iron or steel piece; the voltmeter should read 0 VDC.
- Connect the speed sensor leads and adjust the air gap.
Electronic Governor Actuator Installation (John Deere) installation
- Install the new cover seal into the groove of the integrated actuator cover assembly.
- Position the integrated actuator cover assembly into the top of the pump while holding the metering valve drive coupling parallel to the pump body.
- Carefully slide the cover toward the rear of the pump body until the mounting holes align.
- Use two long cover screws and one short cover screw to assemble the cover to the pump body.
- Tighten the screws to 4--5 Nm (35--45 in. lb.).
- Install a new O-ring on the return line connector, coat lightly with all-purpose grease, and install; tighten to 5--6 Nm (43--55 in. lb.).
- Install the fuel return line to the return line connector.
