Common problems

7
  • Very low oil pressure detected
    Cause: Dependent upon engine speed
Fix: The ECM will stop the engine immediately unless Critical Events Override is active.
  • No signal from primary speed/timing sensor
Fix: The 'DIAGNOSTIC' lamp will indicate a diagnostic fault code which will be logged in the ECM memory. If the ECM does not receive a signal from the primary speed/timing sensor, the ECM will read the signal from the secondary speed/timing sensor. The faulty sensor should be replaced.
  • Intermittent failure of sensors
    Fix: Causes erratic engine control
  • Engine oil pressure sensor failure
Fix: The diagnostic lamp warns the user about the status of the engine oil pressure sensor. The engine oil pressure related strategies will be disabled in the event of a failure of the engine oil pressure sensor. A failure of the engine oil pressure sensor will cause a shutdown of the engine. The faulty sensor should be replaced.
  • Engine fails to start within 30 seconds
Fix: Release the start button or ignition switch, wait for 30 seconds before attempting to start again
  • Engine fails to start after three attempts in cold weather starting
Fix: Investigate the problem using the Perkins electronic service tool
  • Diagnostic lamp illuminates during normal engine operation and the diagnostic lamp shuts OFF
Cause: An intermittent fault may have occurred
Fix: Retrieve logged fault codes and reference appropriate information

Procedures

3
Engaging Driven Equipment operation

⚠ Interrupted starts put excessive stress on drivetrain and waste fuel

  1. Operate engine at one-half rated rpm when possible
  2. Engage driven equipment without load when possible
  3. Ensure gauges are normal at one-half rated rpm
  4. Increase engine rpm to rated rpm before load is applied
  5. Apply load gradually; begin at low load and check gauges frequently
Engine Shutdown operation

⚠ Stopping immediately after heavy load can cause overheating; avoid accelerating before shutdown

  1. Remove load from engine
  2. Reduce engine speed to low idle
  3. Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes to cool
  4. Stop engine after cool-down period
  5. Turn ignition key to OFF position
Engine Warm-up operation

⚠ More time necessary when temperature is below −18°C (0°F)

  1. Run engine at low idle for 3-5 minutes or until jacket water temperature starts to rise
  2. Check all gauges during warm-up period
  3. Perform walk-around inspection; check for fluid and air leaks
  4. Increase engine rpm to rated rpm and check for fluid and air leaks
  5. Engine may be operated at full rated rpm and full load when jacket water reaches 60°C (140°F)
