Procedures

12
Brake cable adjustment adjustment

⚠ Before towing the generator, ensure the towing equipment of the vehicle matches the towing eye

Tools: Jack, Blocks

  1. Pull the towing eye out to the outermost position; hand brake lever downward.
  2. Loosen the lock nuts.
  3. Turn adjusting nuts and brake cable nuts clockwise until no slack remains.
  4. Keep the equalizer perpendicular to the main brake cable.
  5. Apply the hand brake lever several times and repeat the adjustment.
  6. Tighten the nuts with their lock nuts.
  7. Remove the jack and the blocks.
  8. Road test the generator and brake several times.
Brake shoe adjustment adjustment

⚠ Before jacking up the generator, connect it to a towing vehicle or attach a weight of minimum 50 kg to the towbar

Tools: Wrench, Pin 4 mm

  1. Check brake lining thickness through the plugs (5); replace shoes at 1 mm or less.
  2. Lift and support the generator; make sure all brakes are off.
  3. Lock the swivel cams from outside using a 4 mm pin.
  4. Turn the adjusting bolt clockwise with a wrench until the wheel locks up.
  5. Center the brake shoes by actuating the parking brake several times.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt anti-clockwise until the wheel runs free (approx. 1 full turn).
  7. Check the equalizer is perpendicular with the parking brake actuated.
  8. Remove the locking pin and check all lock nuts.
Height adjustment (with adjustable towbar) adjustment

⚠ Height adjustment should be undertaken on levelled ground and in coupled condition

Tools: Support tools, Extension tube

  1. Remove spring pin (1).
  2. Release locking nut (2) with extension tube (3).
  3. Adjust required height of the towbar.
  4. Tighten locking nut (2) by hand first.
  5. Tighten locking nut (2) to the torque in the table.
  6. Fix locking nut (2) with spring pin (1).
Coolant check (monitoring condition) diagnostic

Tools: pH-measuring device (part 2913 0029 00), Refractometer (part 2913 0028 00)

  1. Verify the coolant color visually and confirm no loose particles are floating.
  2. Check the pH value with a pH-measuring device; typical EG value is 8.6.
  3. Check glycol concentration with a refractometer; keep above 33 vol.%, not above 68 vol.%.
  4. Replace coolant if pH is below 7 or above 9.5, or if condition is outside limits.
  5. Always top up with PARCOOL EG only, never with water alone.
Measuring the alternator insulation resistance diagnostic

Tools: 500 V megger

  1. Disconnect the N-terminal from the earthing system if connected.
  2. Disconnect the AVR.
  3. Connect a 500 V megger between the earth terminal and terminal L1.
  4. Generate a voltage of 500 V and read the scale.
  5. Verify the scale indicates a resistance of at least 2 MΩ.
Activating a dry-charged battery maintenance

⚠ Before handling batteries, read the relevant safety precautions

Tools: Electrolyte (sulphuric acid solution in distilled water)

  1. Take out the battery.
  2. Battery and electrolyte must be at equal temperature above 10°C.
  3. Remove cover and/or plug from each cell.
  4. Fill each cell with electrolyte until level reaches 10 to 15 mm above plates.
  5. Rock the battery a few times so air bubbles escape; wait 10 minutes and recheck.
  6. Refit plugs and/or cover.
  7. Place the battery in the generator.
Battery maintenance maintenance

⚠ Observe all relevant environmental and safety precautions

Tools: Petroleum jelly

  1. Keep the battery clean and dry.
  2. Keep the electrolyte level at 10 to 15 mm above the plates.
  3. Top up with distilled water only.
  4. Keep terminals and clamps tight, clean and lightly covered with petroleum jelly.
Cleaning coolers maintenance

⚠ Never steam clean the alternator

⚠ Never leave spilled liquids in or around the generator

Tools: Fibre brush, Steam cleaner

  1. Keep the oil-cooler clean to maintain cooling efficiency.
  2. Remove fan cowl upper part to reach fan side surface of oil cooler.
  3. Remove centre part of front baffles to reach opposite surface.
  4. Steam cleaning with a cleansing agent may be applied.
  5. Remove dirt with a fibre brush; never use a wire brush or metal objects.
  6. Angle jet at approx. 90° to the coolers to avoid damage.
  7. Protect electrical and controlling equipment and air filters against moisture.
  8. Close the service doors afterwards.
Cleaning fuel tank maintenance

⚠ Never leave spilled liquids in or around the generator

Tools: Drain pan

  1. Place an appropriate drain pan under the drainplug of the fuel tank.
  2. Remove the drain plug.
  3. Lift the towbar and tilt the generator approx. 15° to remove all fuel, dirt and water.
  4. Clean the fuel tank and fix the drain plug handtight.
  5. Refill the fuel tank with clean fuel.
Recharging a battery maintenance

⚠ When charging batteries, each cell must be open

Tools: Automatic battery charger

  1. Check electrolyte level in each cell before and after charging; top up with distilled water only.
  2. Keep each cell open, i.e. plugs and/or cover removed.
  3. Prefer the slow charging method.
  4. Set charge current to battery capacity in Ah divided by 20.
  5. Use a commercial automatic battery charger according to its manufacturer's instructions.
Replacing the air filter element maintenance

⚠ Never run the generator without air filter element

⚠ The safety cartridge cannot be cleaned

  1. Release the snap clips and remove the dust trap; clean the trap.
  2. Remove the element from the housing.
  3. Inspect new elements for tears or punctures before installation.
  4. Discard the element when damaged.
  5. Reassemble in reverse order of dismantling.
  6. Inspect and tighten all air intake connections.
  7. Reset the vacuum indicator.
Replacing the coolant maintenance

⚠ Never remove the cooling system filler cap while coolant is hot

⚠ Never mix different coolants

⚠ Topping up with water only is not allowed

  1. Drain the entire cooling system completely.
  2. Dispose or recycle used coolant per local laws.
  3. Flush twice with clean water.
  4. Determine amount of PARCOOL EG required and pour into the radiator top tank.
  5. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, then stop and cool.
  6. Recheck coolant level and add if necessary.
