Common problems

15
  • Unit runs then surges
Cause: Loose or worn spark plug leads
Fix: Check spark plug leads at spark plug & ignition coil
  • The engine cranks but fails to start
    Cause: Fuel tank empty
Fix: Check the fuel tank and fill if necessary
  • The engine runs and then stops or surges
    Cause: Fuel tank empty
Fix: Check the fuel tank and fill if necessary
  • Unit starts and runs, then stops when the start switch is released
    Cause: Low fluid levels
Fix: Check & bring all fluids up to the appropriate levels
  • The engine fails to crank
Fix: Try starting at the genset rather than at the remote control
  • The engine cranks slowly
Cause: Air conditioner and other large loads connected
Fix: Disconnect the air conditioner and other large loads
  • Engine does not crank
    Cause: Faulty remote circuit
Fix: Try starting at the genset control panel. If the genset starts, have the remote circuit repaired as necessary.
  • There is no electrical power even though the genset runs
    Cause: Tripped circuit breakers
Fix: Reset tripped circuit breakers. See Powering Equipment
  • The remote battery condition meter (Fig. 4) indicates low voltage
Cause: Loose or corroded battery cable connections
Fix: Clean and tighten the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cable connections at the battery and the genset
  • Engine cranks but does not start
    Cause: Engine not getting fuel
Fix: Open any closed shutoff valve; Check fuel level and refill as necessary; Prime the fuel system (p.11); Check for fuel (air) leaks at all fittings and tighten as necessary; Replace the fuel filter (p. 16).
  • No AC output voltage at rated engine RPM
    Cause: Load circuit breakers open
Fix: Locate cause of overload and correct as required; reset breaker, or replace if bad
  • Output voltage too high or too low
Cause: Engine not running at correct RPM
Fix: Set RPM per instructions in appropriate engine manual
  • Engine does not start on the second try
Cause: Fuel supply; fuel system may need priming (with an empty tank, the fuel system may need priming before the set can start)
Fix: Check the fuel supply; make sure the fuel system has been primed (see Fuel System in the Maintenance Section)
  • Two blinks indicate shutdown due to a loss of engine oil pressure 2
Cause: Oil pressure drops below 9 psi (62 kPa); the oil pressure switch actuates the fault circuit
Fix: Remove dipstick and check oil level; if low, add oil to bring level up to the Full mark; inspect engine exterior for leaks and repair as necessary
  • Three blinks indicate a service fault — press Stop once to cause the two-digit, second-level shutdown code to blink 3
Fix: Press Stop once to cause the two-digit, second-level shutdown code to blink (pressing Stop again will stop the blinking); locate the problem and make the necessary corrections before resetting breaker and starting the generator set
