Common problems

  • There is no AC output from the generator.
    Cause: 1. Main-line circuit breaker open 2. Fault with vehicle circuit
    Fix: 1. Reset line breaker to ON (or closed). 2. Reset and replace, if necessary.

Adjusting Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Hold the rocker arm jam nut in place as the pivot ball stud is turned.

⚠ Start all four screws before tightening.

Tools: Feeler gauge, 10mm allen wrench, #2 or #3 Phillips screwdriver, Large socket and socket wrench

  1. Make sure the engine is cool and at 60 deg to 80 deg F.
  2. Remove spark plug wires and position them away from plugs.
  3. Remove spark plugs.
  4. Rotate the engine clockwise with a socket on the flywheel nut to bring the piston to Top Dead Center of its compression stroke.
  5. Remove the four screws attaching the valve cover.
  6. Loosen the rocker jam nut and use a 10 mm allen wrench to turn the pivot ball stud while checking clearance with a feeler gauge.
  7. When clearance is correct, hold the pivot ball stud and tighten the rocker arm jam nut to 174 in/lbs.
  8. Recheck valve clearance after tightening.
  9. Install a new valve cover gasket and re-attach the valve cover.
  10. Install spark plugs and re-attach the spark plug wires.
Check and Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment

Tools: 10mm allen wrench, feeler gauge, crow's foot torque wrench

  1. Adjust valve clearance with engine at room temperature, piston at TDC of compression stroke.
  2. Loosen rocker arm jam nut, use 10mm allen wrench to turn pivot ball stud while checking clearance with feeler gauge.
  3. Set intake valve clearance 0.002-0.004 in and exhaust valve clearance 0.002-0.004 in.
  4. Hold pivot ball stud with allen wrench and tighten rocker arm jam nut to 174 inch-pounds with a crow's foot.
  5. Recheck valve clearance after tightening jam nut.
  6. Install rocker arm cover with new gasket and retain with four screws.
Governor Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Pliers

  1. Loosen governor clamp bolt.
  2. Push spring end of governor lever clockwise to wide open throttle position.
  3. Hold governor lever at wide open throttle and rotate governor shaft fully clockwise with pliers.
  4. Tighten governor clamp bolt to 70 inch-pounds (8 N-m) while holding shaft and lever.
  5. Start engine, let stabilize and warm up at no-load.
  6. Turn adjuster nut to obtain 62 Hertz frequency reading.
  7. Reposition governor spring in lever slot if droop is excessive or for greater stability.
  8. Recheck frequency and readjust adjuster nut to obtain 62 Hertz at no-load.
  9. Check AC voltage reading; adjust voltage regulator if incorrect.
Voltage Regulator Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Adjustment must be done only when unit is running at correct governed no-load speed

  1. Run unit at no-load with frequency set to 62.5 Hz.
  2. Slowly turn voltage adjust pot on voltage regulator until 124 VAC is measured.
  3. If voltage is not adjustable, proceed to troubleshooting Problem 2.
Stator Short-to-Ground Insulation Test diagnostic

⚠ Insulation resistance testers are a source of high and dangerous electrical voltage

Tools: Hi-pot tester or megohmmeter

  1. Disconnect and isolate all stator leads including sensing, excitation, battery charge and power leads.
  2. Connect terminal ends of all stator leads together.
  3. Connect tester leads across all stator leads and to frame ground on stator can, apply 1500 volts for no more than 1 second.
  4. If breakdown indicated, clean and dry stator and re-test; replace stator if it fails second test.
Battery Cable Connections installation

⚠ Damage will result if battery connections are made in reverse.

  1. Connect cable from POSITIVE battery post to insulated lug on unit frame.
  2. Connect cable from NEGATIVE battery post to vehicle frame ground.
  3. Connect a cable from vehicle frame ground to negative post on generator frame.
  4. Ensure connectors are clean and tight.
Generator Conversion to 120 Volts Only, Dual Circuits installation

⚠ Do not connect loads in excess of circuit breaker ratings.

⚠ Recommended to be performed by a Generac Authorized Service Dealer.

Tools: 12 AWG jumper wire

  1. Disconnect battery power from the generator.
  2. Re-route stator lead 44 to ground stud previously occupied by lead 33.
  3. Move #18 AWG wire #44 from top of CB1A to top of CB1; renumber as #11.
  4. Re-route stator lead 33 to line side terminal on CB1 (renamed CB1A).
  5. Renumber ground wire 33 as wire 44.
  6. Renumber wire 44A as 33A.
  7. Connect a 12 AWG jumper between line breakers CB1 and CB1A.
  8. Remove the tie bar between the two line breaker switch handles.
LP Gas System Leakage Test installation

⚠ DO NOT USE ANY FLAME TO TEST FOR LEAKS.

Tools: soap and water solution, separate 12 volt DC source

  1. Do not place the generator into service until the gas system has been properly tested for leaks.
  2. Provide a separate source of 12 volts DC to open the gaseous fuel solenoid valve.
  3. Test all connections, hoses, valve regulators and fittings under gas or air pressure of not less than 90 psi (620 kPa).
  4. Use soap and water or an equivalent solution to check for leaks.
Remote Start/Stop Connections installation
  1. If six-wire remote connector is visible below control panel, skip to step 5.
  2. Remove electrical access panel located below REMOTE knockout.
  3. Remove REMOTE knockout without damaging wiring behind it.
  4. Feed remote connector through hole and fit supplied grommet.
  5. Wire remote harness (Part # C6712C) to coach remote start panel.
  6. Plug remote harness into mating remote connector on generator.
Testing Under Load (Post Installation) installation

⚠ You must not allow the unit to overheat during prolonged operation.

  1. Apply electrical loads equal to about 75 to 100 percent of the unit's rated wattage/amperage capacity.
  2. Let the unit run at least 30 minutes with load applied.
  3. Check that the unit is not running excessively hot and that adequate cooling airflow is available.
Battery Maintenance maintenance

⚠ Do not use tap water in batteries.

⚠ Do not use jumper cables to crank the generator.

  1. Inspect battery posts and cables for tightness and corrosion; tighten and clean as necessary.
  2. Check fluid level of unsealed batteries; fill with distilled water only.
  3. Have state of charge and condition checked by a Generac Authorized Service Dealer.
Changing the Engine Oil and/or Oil Filter maintenance

⚠ Do not fill above the FULL mark.

  1. Run engine until warm (at least five minutes), then shut off.
  2. Remove front service door by retracting two latches.
  3. Remove the air filter.
  4. Remove oil drain plug; drain oil into suitable container.
  5. Replace oil drain plug; skip to step 8 if changing oil only.
  6. Remove old oil filter by turning counterclockwise.
  7. Coat new filter gasket with clean oil; install hand-tight then 3/4 to one turn more.
  8. Refill with recommended oil; start engine and check for leaks.
